The endless uses for Lavender Essential Oil (my own favorite list!)

lavender-15ml (1).jpg

Inspiration to share this information comes directly from the healing I have personally experienced since incorporating a daily Essential Oil “practice’ into my life.

Uses for essential oils are endless (as you’ll begin to learn), and my hope is you will get inspired to try them out, and perhaps also begin to replace toxic over-the-counter medicines, household cleaners, and chemically-based health & beauty products with natural, Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils (more about this later).

I’ve chosen to open this doTERRA Essential Oil Blog series with Lavender because this oil was the catalyst for the “rediscovery” of ancient medicinal uses of essential oils by the “Father” of Modern Aromatherapy, René-Maurice Gattefossé.

According to his book, Gattefossé’s Aromatherapy, after an explosion in his lab, René-Maurice was exposed to “burning substances” which caused a “rapidly developing gas gangrene” on his hands. Right then he immersed his hands in Lavender essence, and “this treatment was followed by profuse sweating and healing the next day”. (Gattefossé 87) In this milestone moment was the rediscovery of modern day essential oil healing (or what Gattefossé called "Aromatherapy").

LAVENDER OIL - STARTING OUT

  • Make sure you are using Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil - doTERRA is my brand of choice.

  • You will NOT get the same benefits (and may cause MORE HARM) if you use oils that are cut with chemicals! (More about this later).

  • Remember - we all have our own preferences, and it is always best to work with oils that feel integral to YOUR OWN system at any given time.

  • Lavender Oil is very potent, use sparingly!

  • If you’re pregnant, Lavender oil should be safe to use after your first trimester, however always consult your doctor!

HOW TO USE LAVENDER OIL

BATHING (getting ready for sleep):

  • Relieves tension and works as an anti inflammatory “medicine”.

  • Alleviates body pains and headaches.

  • Measure 2 cups of Epsom Salt with 10 drops of Lavender Oil - shake in a glass or metal jar so the oil emulsifies with the salts.

  • Pour into warm bath water.

  • Soak for 15-20 minutes.

BURNS:

  • Heals Burns + Treats Sunburn (and soothes Insect Bites!)

  • Blend 3-5 drops with a carrier oil, (like fractionated coconut oil) and apply directly to affected area(s).

  • You can also apply Lavender oil “neat” (which means zero dilution) - except on babies and the elderly - they have a bit thinner skin - and it is better to dilute the oil for these beings.

DOGS:

  • Apply 7-10 drops to your own hands, “neat” (no dilution) and gently rub on your pups paws and head (demo on my IGTV feed).

EYES (HOT COMPRESS):

  • For tired or inflamed eyes, works well on styes too.

  • Take a clean washcloth, soak it in hot or very warm water, wring out

  • Put a few drops Lavender Oil, wring out again. (For Styes you can use a couple drops of Roman Chamomile Oil with the Lavender for extra effect.)

  • Hold the compress on eye for 5-10 minutes.

  • When it cools, you can re-soak in hot water again and repeat (optional)

FACE:

  • I like to take a few drops of Lavender Oil and mix it with my favorite Face Oil and apply before bed - more on skin care later - but this is a great, basic way to take care of your skin!

MASSAGE + BODY OIL:

  • SUPER RELAXING!!

  • Soothing to the skin, Helps alleviate inflammation, Helps relieve dermatitis.

  • Mix a few drops of Lavender Oil with a carrier oil and feel the effects of the lavender soak in everywhere on your body!

TO UPLIFT MOOD, RELAX and CALM the MIND + RESOLVE EMOTIONAL CONFLICT:

  • Inhaling Directly:

  • Open the bottle and hold the orifice close to your nose. Inhale with intention, and watch your mood shift IMMEDIATELY!

OR

  • Old-Fashioned Steam pot:

  • Place a few drops of Lavender Oil in near boiling water.

  • Place a towel over your head.

  • Lean over the bowl, inhale the steam!

  • This will relax you immediately, and will also tone your skin!

OR

  • USING A DIFFUSER: fun fact - Lavender was used in Roman times to fumigate sick rooms (It has antibacterial properties. I also use in a diffuser it to drive away insects and clear the air!)

  • Diffusing - I showed this in the IGTV video if you’re looking for a live demo. This is my favorite diffuser.

  • Place 7-10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil in a diffuser, add water, and turn on to shift your mood. **This may cause you to feel sleepy - lavender oil is best diffused at night, when you’re trying to relax and rest!

SLEEP:

  • Use 7-10 drops in a diffuser and you and your family will ALL fall asleep almost IMMEDIATELY!!

  • Put a few drops on your pillow at night.

  • Put on the bottoms of your feet - blend a few drops with Cedarwood Oil for extra effect!

CLEANING:

  • In your Vacuum Cleaner! Put a few drops into your clear vacuum cleaner bag when you change it out. When you vacuum, you will smell Lavender wafting through your apartment.

LAUNDRY:

  • Dryer Balls - much better than using chemical dryer sheets (like Bounce) in your laundry. You can find the Wool Dryer Balls here, which can be used multiple times.

  • Put 3-5 drops of Lavender oil on dryer balls and put in your dryer. (lasts 2-3 dryer cycles before you need to re-apply the Lavender drops).

  • Your laundry will come out super fresh, without static!

  • Saves so much $$$ and trash (you don’t end up with a used dryer sheet to throw out each time).

BLENDS WELL WITH:

  • Lavender blends well with these other Essential Oils

  • Geranium

  • Cedarwood

  • Clary Sage

  • Bergamot

  • Lemon

  • Clove

  • Black Pepper

  • Vetiver
